Submit

This will all be over quicker if you just submit. [Link]

Even though it might sound harsh and impolitic, here is the bottom line: if you don’t want to get shot, tased, pepper-sprayed, struck with a baton or thrown to the ground, just do what I tell you. Don’t argue with me, don’t call me names, don’t tell me that I can’t stop you, don’t say I’m a racist pig, don’t threaten that you’ll sue me and take away my badge. Don’t scream at me that you pay my salary, and don’t even think of aggressively walking towards me. Most field stops are complete in minutes. How difficult is it to cooperate for that long?

He says it far more eloquently and from more of a position of "being there" than I ever could. But yes, oh so emphatically yes! I've never understood the belligerence and disrespect people think should be perfectly acceptable when dealing with an enforcement officer. If you have nothing to hide, if you've done nothing wrong, why the resistance? People have no respect for officers who put themselves in harm's way voluntarily. They're pigs and jackboots until you need one. The thing is, they DO have the authority to confront you, if they have probable cause. There's nothing to be gained from resistance or disrespect except possible escalation. Unless you'd care to step up and put your own life in danger by performing the duties of police officers, then you should relax and let them do their jobs. EVERY walk of life has certain people who will attempt to abuse their authority, but to assume that all enforcement personnel are thugs is stupid and dangerous. This man is willing to put himself and his fellow officers on record with body cams. He's saying he has nothing to hide. We should be willing to do the same thing.

This guy responds better to that than I can.

Ha! Can you say "class envy?" It's something else that makes my blood boil. He can bitch all he wants, but until he comes up with viable solutions, all he is is one more critic. If he's so sure we're going to hell in a hack, tell me, why is he still, ya know, here? There must be somewhere else on the planet where he'd be more content and satisfied. The rest of us would have to muddle along without him. Pointing out a problem is a far cry from solving it. Belly-achers abound. I wanna hear some actual problem solving, thank you.

To be clear, my above comment pertains to a reference in a comment to the article you provided, also in Popehat, called Clark in the comment.

However, the more I reread the article you provided, the more incensed I get that the writer conflates water regulations with potential situations of life-or-death. His comprisons are specious, at best. Police officers don't enforce civil violations. Those get handled in court. It's the possibly criminal violations that cause police confrontations. There's real danger involved, both to the police and to the civilian population.
