Why do apps from the same company look worse on Android than on iPhone?

The biggest difference between the iPhone and Android I have seen is the fit and finish of the software. It just looks and feels nicer on the iPhone. The Android apps are functional, but not ergonomic or polished. I think the cultural disregard for aesthetics is a Unix thing: utilitarian functionality and customization over design.
