Long place names

When I saw this, I immediately thought I had been to one of the places, but it was not on the list.

Why is this the worst place name in the world? In Maori, the native language of New Zealand, the “wh” sound is pronounced “f”. Say it aloud in your office and see what happens.

The 22 Worst Place Names in the World

Courtesy of Mark comes this list of badly named places in the world. Number 8 is where my parents got married. And what place is number one?

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch in Wales. Sarah and I were there on our honeymoon.

This Welsh town has become famous because of its very long name. It has the longest railway station name in the United Kingdom, and now the longest single word domain name in the world. The name translates as "St Mary's church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio of the red cave".

If you go to the tourist information office in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch and ask the staff nicely they will be only too happy to pronounce the name of the town for you. They get asked to do this many times a day, every day, so remember to be polite. If you cant get to the town then what are you to do? Well, are you wondering how to pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch? Than just turn on your speakers and give me a click.

We stopped there for a photo op and a brief stop in their store.
