SWAT Team Raids House at 6 AM to Execute a Dept. of Education Search Warrant for Defaulted Student Loans

When did student loan default rise to the level of armed meth lab? [Link]

I know Mike Riggs just mentioned it in the morning links, but if this story isn't a wake-up call about the militarization of police andcriminalization of everything, then I'm afraid the patient is even deader than the Fourth Amendment. Read this, and weep for what your country has become:
STOCKTON, CA - Kenneth Wright does not have a criminal record and he had no reason to believe a S.W.A.T team would be breaking down his door at 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
"I look out of my window and I see 15 police officers," Wright said.
Wright came downstairs in his boxer shorts as a S.W.A.T team barged through his front door. Wright said an officer grabbed him by the neck and led him outside on his front lawn.
"He had his knee on my back and I had no idea why they were there," Wright said.
According to Wright, officers also woke his three young children ages 3, 7, and 11 and put them in a Stockton police patrol car with him. Officers then searched his house.
As it turned out, the person law enforcement was looking for was not there - Wright's estranged wife.
"They put me in handcuffs in that hot patrol car for six hours, traumatizing my kids," Wright said. [...]
The U.S. Department of Education issued the search and called in the S.W.A.T for his wife's defaulted student loans.

Ahem. I keep imploring you conspiracy theorists not to take the word of the victim without checking the other side of the story. The media is guilty of the same thing. They're in such a hurry to "expose" the supposed Police State, they buy into whatever the oppressed citizen spews. Do they actually think the guy's gonna make himself look like a criminal in his description of the incident? S.W.A.T. Team. Sheesh. I ask you.

Don't worry, that egg on your face will wash off with a little warm water and soap.

What egg? The Department of Education has a SWAT team. What educational reasons should they have one for? She apparently committed fraud. Fine, but was a SWAT team assault warranted? Almost certainly not.

SWAT teams are for when they believe the subject is armed, dangerous and likely trying to destroy evidence. We are seeing a continued normalization of military tactics in civilian circumstances and I do not think it is right.

Yeah, but a) his estranged wife had nothing to do with it, he made that up, and b) it wasn't a S.W.A.T. team, he made that up, too.

Also, DOE has a S.W.A.T. team, all right. Only it's the Dept. of Energy. Show me where Dept. of Education has one.

Education Department confirms raid and that the estranged wife was the subject of the search warrant: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0611/56530.html

Ok, it's not a SWAT team, it's a paramilitary unit to serve search warrants. Semantics.
