Self Deportation

You can't make stuff like this up. [Link]
It’s good to know that despite the colossal mess the country’s immigration system is in, the government is working overtime to fix it.

For example, coming up with something like ICE Scheduled Departure Program for non-criminal fugitive aliens.

It’s so simple, it’s brilliant.

In a nutshell you turn yourself in and you deport yourself. In a tottering economy, you save the tax payers thousands of dollars. And you have the privilege of deporting yourself.

Ask not what ICE can do for you. Ask what you can do for ICE. Like its job, I guess.

There’s even a handy 1-866 toll free number you can call if “you are an immigration fugitive and have questions about whether you qualify for the Scheduled Departure Program.”

Wait, wasn't there supposed to be a sort of amnesty-like component to the whole illegal immigrant proposals? Something about they could go home, then come back legally and go through the procedure properly? I seem to recall that being included in both plans proposed, but never implemented earlier on by Congress. This so-called self-deportation would accomplish just that, only we'd be paying the airfare. Not a bad idea, really. I would imagine there is a fair number of illegals who can't afford to go home even if they wanted to. With some sort of arrangement in place to, say, hold their jobs until they get back, something like that, who knows how many might take advantage of an opportunity like this, if they knew they wouldn't be prosecuted.

The only exception would be political asylum candidates, who probably shouldn't be forced to return to someplace that'll shoot them on sight. But for others, I kinda thought this self-deportation idea had merit. Here we go again, huh? I can't help it if you keep hitting my hot button issues.
