That's a fascinating piece. As I think back on recent outings, I don't remember even noticing who was eating there, in terms of white or black. Now I'm forced to wonder if that was because there were only whites there, predominantly, and I just didn't notice or care. An essay like this, while well-intentioned, may serve to make diners more aware of who is around them, not less, as it should be. I have a thing about so-called "Southern Hospitality" anyway. I find it patently hypocritical. I would much rather know whether I was or was not welcome, than to be falsely accepted, then talked about behind my back. I cannot, however, remember a single instance of being unwelcome in an ethnic eating establishment. I wonder how much of the disparity mentioned in this piece stems from prices, as much as anything else. If the black and Hispanic population is generally less affluent than the white population, then they wouldn't be as likely to frequent high-end eating establishments. It doesn't have to be racial. Might also be financial.
